She pays close attention to detail and cares a lot about the project. I appreciate the thorough job and having an eye for small details. She looks up words, and concepts, making sure everything is used correctly. I’d recommend her and would use her again for more writing projects.

The editor is seemingly incapable of making a normal face for a selfie, here she combines a fish face and crossed eyes while standing on the beach, wearing a black hoodie and leather jacket. The sun is setting, it's a gorgeous day, but the wind is blowing her green hair.

About Me

I believe knowledge is power and stories are how we know ourselves.

With roots in student media and writing workshops, the importance of accuracy in addition to voice, and mentorship over management, are core to my editing and collaborative ethos.

I thrive on new knowledge and have experience with digital illustration, data analysis, developmental editing, event planning… even calligraphy and writing an index.

I’m a storyteller at heart. With many bells and whistles.

advocacy

Journalistic integrity dictates at least the appearance of neutrality. As my education progressed, I felt I had to decide. And ultimately, I didn't feel like I could in good conscience choose neutrality.

I’ve fundraised for the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, the Nature Conservancy, and NARAL, raising at least $1,000 per week in small donations. I did door-to-door Get Out the Vote work in Colorado in 2012. I’ve edited for a business reporting on corporate environmental accountability. And I currently event plan, manage social media, collaborate with local businesses, and plan park cleanups with the Seattle nonprofit, ParkPunks.

I can use AI. I have used AI. I choose not to. My art has taken a distinct turn for the human recently. It's imperfectly beautiful. Like us.

a story well told

I prefer stories that inform, challenge, empower, and entertain. As an editor, I want to empower a writer to do the same. I come with mastery of English grammar. The why of each word. Every period. With a mind for accessibility and belief in the intellect and compassion of the audience.

in conversation

I've written about one thing before. Finance for one publication, zoology for another... But I'm not interested in or informed about one thing. And I've frequently found that knowledge about one domain illuminates another in unpredictable and fascinating ways. A current event reminds me of a historic event; then there's the geography, a study, and a data illustration... They all exist in conversation with one another across time and channels/pages.

Get documentary recommendations. Get a history lesson. Get political action items. And tie it all together with me at my monthly newsletter.

I’m neutral until information compels an opinion. I announce when something is opinion. I’m also a big fan of adverbs, like “frequently,” “sometimes,” and “often.” I don’t broad brush, and I believe that if I can’t represent people who disagree with me honestly, perhaps my stance isn’t that strong.

I know we’re not talking — or listening — to each other enough. That everything informs everything. And perhaps there’s something more trustworthy in a writer who makes no pretense at neutrality, notes when something is opinion, cites her sources, and has no sponsors.
