Welcome to my writing blog, The Inkwell

Where we discuss the craft of writing.

I’ve always been hesitant to speak on things that someone’s already said well. I generally want the person who said it to get their flowers. At most, I add a relevant personal experience while drawing attention to their work.

This is to say: I don’t know that we need another publishing industry blog. There are already people doing brilliant work in this field. I encourage you to look at their work, and will occasionally share it here.

I will be writing about craft, sharing tips and tricks that have worked for me, discussing tropes and common advice, and otherwise dissecting what “works” in the art of storytelling. This alongside a space where I aggregate industry headlines, resources and writing contests that I think you will benefit from knowing about.

I’ve been given bad advice that I followed for years before altering course. I’ve grappled with prolonged writer’s block. I’ve stood in my own way. I’ve struggled with writing prompts that didn’t spark my creativity or that seemed contrived, and that certainly didn’t attempt to solve what was blocking me in the first place. I’d like to prevent others from similar pitfalls.

Whether you’re halfway through a novel and just can’t see what happens next, haven’t written in years and can’t stop staring at blank documents in defeat, or you just don’t think you’re any “good,” it’s my hope that something I write helps you move forward and grow in your craft.

And a style note: the keen-eyed might have spotted that nothing on this site is in Chicago style. This is because websites are typically done in AP style. I “speak” both editing languages fluently because I’m fancy. And ne’er the two shall meet.
